Updates and: Ipso Facto I’m Awesome

Seeing as my blog is now officially a platform for my personal thoughts, I figured that it would be prudent to bombard my few unlucky RSS subscribers with some quasi-random happenings in my life.

For those of you who don’t know – I am a freshman at DePaul University, living in Chicago. I am in the throws of finals week. Being a ‘Blue Demon’ certainly has it’s perks (I’m told), but it also has a very large disadvantage, that, come to think of it, is only a real disadvantage three weeks out of my school year. What is it? The quarter system. Most schools are broken up into two semesters which means only two weeks of finals per academic year. However, here at DePaul we have the quarter system – which breaks up the year into three smaller semesters, so I end up with 4 more classes than the rest of you goofs. If you have a PhD in mathematics, you’ve no doubt already figured out that I have the great privilege to enjoy not just two, but three weeks of finals per year. Go me. On the up, I get out of here on Friday. Hopefully I’ll still have hair left to pull out by then.

In less academic news, but news that’s still in the academic ballpark, I’ve installed ActiveState’s Active Perl on my primary machine, along with the Eclipse Perl Integration plugin for the increasingly popular Eclipse editor (fuck you BlueJ!). I can’t really explain why I have this sudden interest in learning perl – but I’m fairly certain it has a lot to do with wanting to lean how to write scripts that help me be more productive. It also might have something to do with that unopened book about perl sitting on my shelf – I just really liked the camel on the cover. Thanks a lot O’Reilly. Honestly, I bought the book with the intent of someday reading it, and now that summer is freeing up my busy schedule I’ll have plenty of time for it. Look for some copy (oh sophistication!) that has to do with scripting popping up sometime in the future here at The Angry Walrus.

I’ve also made the decision that Passion Pit is awesome. Unfortunately, they aren’t on the pitchfork lineup – but I can’t really complain seeing as how lovely the rest of the lineup is looking. Woof.

I also seem to have developed a rabid interest in taking my girlfriend on a camping trip somewhere in the state. I look forward to waging war with the raccoon population of southern Illinois. I have a black belt in being generally awesome. Campsite suggestions if you have them?
