One year down…

My freshman year is now officially over. Finals are done with. While it feels great to be finished with classes and all that, I’m absolutely dreading the release of exam grades. My concern is limited to only two of my classes, but mostly, just one – Modern Political Thought. Right now my excuse for my lackluster exam/class performance is that I’m just simply not accustomed to philosophy – at all. This is the first course I’ve taken that has been any way involved with philosophy. It’s different that what I’m used to. I can integrate by parts; I can write an inductive mathematical proof, I can write a computer program – but when I’m asked to compare and contrast the substance of two groups of political theorists and then compare how their philosophies attempt to move the human condition forward – my brain blows a fuse.

Perhaps I didn’t follow the writing as well as I thought. Perhaps the lectures were tough to follow. Perhaps I didn’t work hard enough in the class. My money is on choice #3. I could blame that on any number of things, and I bet I would sound pretty convincing. I would know my excuses to be simply false however.

Moral: Take good notes. You’ll miss having nice ones when it’s time to review for an exam. I think I might buy one of those little tape recorders that you see journalists frantically waving in people’s faces all the time. You know, to assist.
