Protect Your Blog From Spam!

I recently wrote a blog post about spam. In my post, I mentioned that I’ve been getting a bit of comment spam on my blog. It’s not something that I’m too horribly alarmed about – but it is a bit of an annoyance. It’s especially annoying when I get comments that consist of the ‘Cool post’ sort of message, bt I suppose that comes with the whole do-follow blogging approach.

In my rantings against spam I mentioned that there were two types of spam that I deal with. The first type, the non constructive comments with bogus links, I won’t speak too much about because the only way to protect your blog from that stuff is through heavy comment moderation. The second type is the automated stuff. If you own a blog I’m sure you know what sort I’m talking about. The automated spam comments consist usually of jumbled characters, and a ton of malware encrusted links to sites selling penis enlargement pills. You know, the same bull shit that you get in your email.

Anyway, I hinted in the post mentioned above that I would draft an anti-spam guide. I’m a little tired of dealing with automated spam, and it seems there are plenty of others in the Wordpress community who are as well because there are plenty of plugins that have been made available to deal with this problem.

On The Anti-Spam Front…

Here’s a bit of a list I’ve compiled of anti spam plugins for use with the Wordpress blogging platform. Most plugins involve some sort of ‘captcha’ protection. unfortunately, most spam bots have become adept at overcoming this countermeasure, but it’s worth a try – no doubt. For more information on how these plugins work, download information, and usage instructions feel free to click through these links.

  1. Akismet
  2. Math Comment Spam Protection
  3. Peter’s Anti Spam Image
  4. Challenge
  5. Referrer Bouncer
  6. WP-Spamfree

Of course, you could always make your commenters register for an account on your blog that grants comment permissions, but personally, I think that’s a little debilitating to users. That could be the difference between getting a nice comment, or scaring someone off by forcing them to register. There are plenty more plugins to choose from of course, but these are some that have worked well for people, and I encourage you to look into them.
