Hectic

Posted by Matt on Aug 21 2008 | Life

Updates have been sparse lately, I know. I ask that you bear with me for the next week or two while I get set to move in, and start college. It’s been a hectic time for me the past couple weeks, and it will continue to be for the next week or so. I can’t do much about it - it’s just one of those ‘rough patches’ where I won’t be able to type words for the blog. I’ll be back in force once I get settled - but in the mean time updates will continue to be sparse. I’m moving in to my college dorm on the 31st of this month.

What can you do until then? Well, you can check out the bunch of links I’ve been compiling on the bottom of this page. I’ve spent some time compiling a list of blogs that I’m fond of reading, in the hopes of sharing them with you guys (my readers). So check them out! See what you like! The internet is a big and wonderful place with lots of good stuff to read. Just stay the hell away from 4chan!

Protect Your Blog From Spam!

Posted by Matt on Aug 12 2008 | How To, internet

I recently wrote a blog post about spam. In my post, I mentioned that I’ve been getting a bit of comment spam on my blog. It’s not something that I’m too horribly alarmed about - but it is a bit of an annoyance. It’s especially annoying when I get comments that consist of the ‘Cool post’ sort of message, bt I suppose that comes with the whole do-follow blogging approach.

In my rantings against spam I mentioned that there were two types of spam that I deal with. The first type, the non constructive comments with bogus links, I won’t speak too much about because the only way to protect your blog from that stuff is through heavy comment moderation. The second type is the automated stuff. If you own a blog I’m sure you know what sort I’m talking about. The automated spam comments consist usually of jumbled characters, and a ton of malware encrusted links to sites selling penis enlargement pills. You know, the same bull shit that you get in your email.

Save The Olympics From Advertising

Posted by Matt on Aug 11 2008 | Life

the Olympics

Generally, I wouldn’t be the one throwing rocks at a peaceful gathering of nations, but during my watching of the games the past few days I’ve become a little bit disgusted on the account of the sorts of commercials I’ve been seeing. I’ve been seeing our American athletes turning into marketing tools. Is that what the Olympics has come to? It’s a bastardization of what the Olympics mean and stand for. It’s not responsible, and it isn’t fair.

The Olympic Games give the world a sense of fellowship. It gives a nation’s populace something to stand behind, and cheer for. It unites countries, and divides them. The Modern Games are a very powerful force in our world. My argument is that we, as a responsible society - albeit overweight, angry, and politically retarded society - should take steps to hold onto the sanctity of the Olympics by not using our athletes to coax me into a trip to McDonald’s. It’s just wrong.

Oh, Spam! How I loathe Thee.

Posted by Matt on Aug 03 2008 | Site News

I don’t like spam. I get it a lot in my email inbox, and sometimes it can be good for a laugh. I get spam about almost everything under the sun. Fake Rolex watches, real estate, penis enlargement - almost anything. Of course, I can deal with it because it’s email, and is fairly simple to delete from both your mind, and that creepy corner of your inbox. What I really really don’t like is comment spam.

To be clear for the uninitiated, and lucky, few, comment spam is a type of spam that will appear via the comment feature on a website. Blogs are the best way to demonstrate the phenomenon. Specifically, Wordpress, the blogging software that I am currently using, is a bit of a spam magnet. Spammers target blogs that have commenting available to users, and try to get away with posting ridiculous shit that no one is interested in - in a very obvious fashion as well. I mean, I get spammers trying to post a list of fucking links, pictures, and even short stories laced with keywords, it’s insanity. It’s like their praying to the god of idiocy that I’ll be asleep at the wheel, and allow this keyword-ridden dribble to be looked at by Google. I understand this shit is automated, but I’m also a non-idiot who is very much not asleep in front of any sort of wheel.
